Doctor Who: Captain Jack Returns

Captain Jack is Back!

Hey everyone,

Welcome back to the lab!

Today’s post is an impromptu one, On Doctor Who’s 57th Birthday no less, we have just found out that John Barrowman is reprising his role as Captain Jack Harkness in this year's Doctor Who festive special Revolution of the Daleks.

Captain Jack was first introduced back in 2005 with The Ninth Doctor and has been a fan-favourite ever since, appearing in multiple episodes and even starring in his own spin-off Torchwood. Before this year, Jack was last seen on Doctor Who in 2010 when David Tennant said goodbye to the role. He was heard in Big Finish Audio dramas over the years but fans have been begging for him to return to the role on TV for years.

That was until earlier this year when he popped up for a cameo in Series 12 episode Fugitive of the Judoon to give a warning to The Doctor's friends before disappearing again. Fans had hoped that it wasn’t the last we had seen of the character and there has been speculation that he was seen on set for the festive special but nothing was confirmed until today with a trailer and a press release! The press release reads:

‘In the upcoming special titled, Revolution of the Daleks, Captain Jack will be on hand to help ‘the fam’ as they discover a disturbing plan forming involving one of the Doctor’s most feared and dangerous enemies, the Daleks. With the Thirteenth Doctor locked away in a space prison, will Captain Jack be able to help save planet Earth?’

The Special will pick up where the finale of Series 12 left off, with The Doctor having been imprisoned and her friends stuck back on earth. I for one am very excited to see Jack back for an episode and hope that it is the start off a long return for his character. Fans (Including myself) are also excited to see him encounter The 13th Doctor at long last! When speaking about returning to the role, John Barrowman said:

Putting on Jack’s coat and setting foot back on the set of Doctor Who was just like going back home, It’s always thrilling to play Captain Jack. He’s a character very close to my heart who changed my life, and to know the fans love him as much as I do makes his return even sweeter. I hope everyone enjoys Jack’s heroic adventure with Thirteen.”

With a release date not been confirmed yet except for it being within the festive season, fans will have to wait and see how Jack reunites with The Doctor and if they will overcome the dreaded Daleks.

Well how about that! What a piece of news to be released on Doctor Who’s 57th Birthday. A show that means a hell of a lot too many including myself. It’s a show that’s filled with hope and joy, it gives us escapism when we need it the most and we need it now more than ever, the festive special cannot come soon enough.

Happy Birthday Doctor Who. We cannot wait to hear what the next 57 years have in store.

Until next time,

Stay safe,
