Dune (2021) Exclusive IMAX Screening Thoughts

We got a chance to see world exclusive footage from the film! Check out what we saw!

Hey guys,

Welcome back to the Lab!

Spontaneous post today, however it is a good one, as yesterday myself and one of my closest friends Dan got to go to an exclusive IMAX event in Cineworld Leicester Square to be some of the first people around the world to see footage from this year's highly anticipated movie Dune.

Yes, you read that right.

We’re going to go over in minor detail what we got to see and our reactions with teases as to what you can expect. We are NOT going to spoil much for this (If anything) as we want you all to be able to experience this first hand. Let’s get into it!

I quickly want to give a massive shout out and thank you to Warner Brothers UK for supplying us with the tickets!

Dune is a film directed by Denis Vilneauve based on the hit sci-fi novel by Frank Herbert. It stars Timothee Chalamet; Zendaya; Rebecca Ferguson; Oscar Issac; Jason Mamoa; Josh Brolin amongst many others.

Going into this event, I wasn't sure what to expect, we knew we were going to be the first to see the exclusive trailer (That has just debuted), however apart from that we wasn't too sure. We knew the event was 30 minutes long. The trailer would be 3 and a half minutes long. What we did not expect was to see multiple behind the scenes featurettes alongside a scene from the movies and also the first ten minutes.

Yes. We saw the first ten minutes of Dune and it was breathtaking.

I can’t stress this enough, this film (From what we saw) looks stunning. The visuals are so ground and every little detail has been thought out and accounted for. Having read the novel, it is exactly how I pictured it looking from the outset and then adds even more. This is a film that has been made for IMAX, and you can see that as soon as it’s on screen. It needs the widest screen possible for you to get the full experience. You would be a fool to not see this in IMAX.

Everything we saw, from the cinematography to the sound-design was immaculate and incredible. You really get the sense of scope that the film and Vilneauve is wanting to achieve. Adding with Hans Zimmer's truly outstanding new score - In which is revealed via a featurette that he invented a new instrument for this movie - you really feel immersed in the scene. We also get to see some of the characters in the first ten minutes such as Timothee Chalamet as Paul, Zendaya as Chani as well as Rebecca Ferguson; Josh Brolin & Oscar Issac. For those of you that are worried about the cast not ‘Fitting’ with the characters, you can rest easily. The cast members we saw were amazing. You can see that they fully understand these characters and a lot of thought has gone into it.

Alongside the first ten minutes, we also saw a five minute scene from the movie. Without spoiling too much, it contained Arrakis, Spice Mine & a Sandworm (Those of you that have read the book will know exactly what im talking about). Again, this was unlike anything I have ever seen on a cinema screen. I understand you may be reading this going “C’mon, you’re exaggerating” but I'm not. I don't think I have truly seen a scene/film of this magnitude before. This scene demonstrated that. The scene plays out with Zimmers score starting low in the background and slowly getting more and more prominent as the scene plays, heightening the tension. By the time the footage finished, we were all in shock at what we saw. Add to that getting to see the new trailer and all of this being shown to us in IMAX. We felt like the luckiest people ever.

I understand all you have to go on is my word, and I haven't given away much but truly, I don't want to spoil it for you. As I told my friend, this is going to be a very special film and one that has to be experienced in IMAX with your friends and family. I know there are some people that are quite nervous about this movie as they are huge fans of the books, don't get me wrong I too had my doubts, but after seeing even just the little footage we did. You have nothing to worry about, We saw this in the behind the scenes footage we got. The main thing I took away from that was Villeneuve; cast and crew have treated this with such care to detail and dedication, it’s going to be a really special ride.

Aswell as all of this, I should add. There’s been much speculation as to if this film is the first of two, or if it's standalone. The titlecard for the movie we were shown said “Dune. Part One”. So rest assured. A second part of this film should be coming.

Overall, from what we were shown, Dune is looking like it is going to be a masterpiece. It's a film that will be grand in scale and in scope, with fans of the book and those just wanting to see a film being pleased alike. I for one will be seeing this on opening day, popcorn in hand, In the IMAX with my friends, excited to go to the world of Arrakis.

I feel very privileged to see some of this film with Dan yesterday. I wish more could have seen what we did. It was a really cool experience with such a good friend. Thank you again to Warner Brothers UK for the tickets and to my friend Dan for coming along!

We will see you soon for a new post,

Until then,

Stay Safe, Look after one another.
