It's time to say goodbye to our favourite misfits!
James Gunn has wrapped up the final film in his Guardians Trilogy with the release of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3.
It has been a long time coming, with points where it may not have happened at all. However the time has finally come, we’ve been to our local cinema and gone on a ride with our favourite misfits. So the question is, is the film as good as people say?!
Yes.
This film is fantastic, I really really enjoyed this movie.
Having loved the first two guardians I was apprehensive how the third film will "end" the trilogy and to what extent. I think Gunn has weaved a story that shows the audience why we love this group of imperfect heroes harbouring back to the first film whilst bringing something new and fresh to audiences whilst also bringing it to a satisfying conclusion yet also leaving some room for further instalments down the line.
The Story is darker than those of the first two films as its themes such as animal cruelty are much more relatable to our real world but Gunn never has those themes in the film to just ‘throw them in there’, everything is treated carefully and with respect and serves a purpose within the story. It also makes you loathe the antagonist of the High Evolutionary. You’ll find yourself putting Kang and Thanos to one side as the most hated Villain in the MCU to this guy. He is chilling, methodical and downright nasty. A true Villain who truly ups the stakes.
The story is also much more emotional, it’s no spoiler to say this has been advertised as the final adventure for this group as a team, and by the end of the film you understand why. It may not be the last we see of certain characters, but that doesn’t make it any less emotional.
Rocket is the clear and main focus of this film, and he is great as well as Bradley Cooper (who plays him), if you love Rocket before, you'll love him even more after. The film focuses on his backstory in much more detail than we have previously learned. Again this does lead to some emotionally challenging scenes, but still serves the story and is great none the less.
The rest of the cast are also fantastic in this, each character In the main team gets a true chance to shine. Chris Pratt Shines as Peter Quill once again, bringing his charm and humour whilst also dealing with the loss of Gamora. Karen Gillan as Nebula brings a new side to her we haven’t seen yet, Dave Bautista as Drax and Pom Klementieff have such great chemistry and with between each other, each scene between them is a joy to watch. Groot/Vin Diesel as always is brilliant too.
It’s Genuinely hard for me to pick a standout as each had a moment in this film that made me love their character even more than I originally did.
Will Poulter as Adam Warlock was a fun addition to this movie, whilst I could see where his characters arc was heading I had fun with the character all the same. He’s not a main character in this movie so his screen time is not much, but I do hope we get to see more of him in the future.
My only drawback would be Gamora's arc, as much as Zoe Saldana is great in this film, and her role makes sense in the purpose of the story, it did sometimes feel that her character was kinda there so we can have the full group back. I think more than anything it just shows how great the old Gamora was with this team. Either Way Zoe Saldana killed it in this role just like she always has.
Overall Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 is a fantastic ending to this trilogy, If this is truly the end of these films, then they have left on a high, but I do hope we see these characters again as I’m sure we will. it’s shown us no matter how imperfect we may be, anyone can be a hero.
8/10.
