Let's Get into It!
Hey Guys,
Welcome back to the lab.
I hope you’re keeping safe and well in what certainly is a testing time for us all. From us to you, keep going, you’re doing brilliantly.
Today’s post is a more personal one. For those that have stuck around since the beginning of The Review Lab would remember a previous post entitled ‘Doctor Who and Me’, in which i spoke about how the show was an inspiration yet also a lifeline for me. Today i want to write about something similar. This time i am going to talk about The Weekly Planet Podcast, Planet Broadcasting and its community it has created.
The Weekly Planet is a podcast that started back in 2013 by hosts James (Also known as Mr Sunday Movies) and Nick Mason (Whom fans know as Maso). Along with Mr Sunday’s youtube channel (Mr Sunday Movies), each week both James and Maso bring us the latest in comic book movie news, TV, Gaming, whilst also delivering their own opinions and humour along with it. Over the years the podcast has expanded into their own podcasting network entitled Planet Broadcasting with additional podcasts such as ‘Suggestible’ (Hosted by Claire Tonti and Mr Sunday) and ‘We Got We Got This Covered Covered’ (Hosted by James and Maso).
Teaming up with Claire Tonti as CEO (James Wife, Also known as Mrs Sunday Movies), the three expanded this podcast into a huge network and community (Entitled the Gr8 Mates) where fans have all come together through all elements of social media to share posts about their own loves of Comics, TV, Film and even sharing news about their own personal events. It is a community that has been built on respect, humour and love. In a time where the world is so upside down, it is so refreshing to see a community that respects each other's opinions and supports one another. I myself have seen so much support from the Gr8 Mates community on platforms such as facebook for my own projects such as The Review Lab.
For me, the podcast and community have been much more than just a podcast and fans to talk too, Like Doctor Who, this has been a huge lifeline for me. In times where I have felt extremely lost, or even burnt out and alone, the simple act of popping some headphones in and jumping back into James and Maso’s conversation felt like reuniting with two friends each week. Each episode brings warmth and humour, alongside healthy debate and interesting viewpoints on pop culture.
It’s safe to say the podcast and network have been a massive inspiration for me, each week listening to the podcast, or engaging with the community and watching one of the youtube videos just further fueled my passion for starting this blog and subsequently teaming up with one of my closest friends Connor Nagi in creating our own podcast, (Rock, Spock and Two Smoking Microphones - Available now on Spotify, Apple Podcasts and Stitcher).
Now there will be some people reading this that say, “Well it’s just a podcast” or “Well you’re only writing a blog” but for me it's much more than that. The Weekly Planet; The Community; This Blog is an escape. It’s a chance to get away from a world in which things are so troubled and filled with so much anxiety and it’s a chance to talk about these topics I care so much about, to laugh, to have healthy debate and discussion. A chance to just smile without the worries of everything that is going on and forget about my own worries and anxieties.
So why have I written this post, well i have a few reasons. For one i want more people to discover this podcast and community that has brought me so much joy, and another reason is to say that if there’s something that matters to you, whether that's a podcast; a TV Show; a film; Music; Reading, whatever it is. Hold on to it, enjoy it, let it bring you joy and inspiration to create your own passions and projects. Like i have said, in a world in which things are upside down, it’s good to have these passions to turn back too.
To The Weekly Planet Pod, James, Maso, Claire, everyone who works behind the scenes like RawCollings and Ben and The Gr8 Mates Community i want to say thank you for providing me inspiration. Thank you for making me laugh weekly and reminding me that things aren't as bad as they seem. Thank you.
To all of you reading this, to everyone that has been supporting the blog, our new podcast and providing love, I want to thank all of you too. I can’t put into words how much it means. Thank you.
